Chronic Jaw Pain: What Can Be Done When There’s No Clear Diagnosis?

Chronic jaw pain can be incredibly frustrating and quite upsetting for most people. For many patients, the most difficult part is not just the pain itself, it’s the worry and uncertainty surrounding it.
Scans can look normal, symptoms change over time, pain can even move between the jaw, temples, ears, neck and teeth.
Unfortunately, there may not be one single identifiable cause. BUT that doesn’t mean the pain isn’t real. AND it doesn’t mean nothing can be done.
Chronic jaw pain is very common, often manageable, and does not always mean something serious is happening.

Many patients experience symptoms that fluctuate over time, often improving with conservative care, reassurance, and reducing overload rather than constantly trying to “fix” the jaw itself.
If you are currently experiencing a flare-up in jaw pain, try the following:
avoiding excessive gum chewing
trying not to clench the teeth during the day
using heat on tight jaw muscles
choosing softer foods temporarily if the jaw feels particularly irritated
becoming aware of habits like leaning on the jaw or tensing the face unconsciously
These may sound like very small changes, but one of the most important parts of managing jaw pain is simply becoming more aware of how we hold and use the jaw throughout the day.
If you are waking in the night with pain or you experience most of the pain when you wake in the morning, for some patients, a custom-made occlusal appliance or splint may also help reduce strain on the teeth and jaw muscles, particularly where grinding or clenching is involved.

Your dentist will be able to identify signs of grinding or clenching during a routine dental examination - both of which can contribute to chronic jaw pain and muscle tension.
For eligible patients, this assessment may be covered for free as part of the PRSI dental examination. Book your appointment today with D4 Dentist: https://d4dentist.portal.dental/
